RVYC Illusion Class

Illusion racing at the RVYC on Wootton Creek and in the warm summer months is quite unique. Although the sailboat has a very low freeboard, you can race without drysuits and in the relative comfort of a spray top.

Surrounded by the wooded foreshore on the west side of the creek and the ferry channel on the east side, the racing area is varied, scenic and atmospheric.

Racing follows the simple yet successful format of windward leeward courses, ideal for the 12 foot Illusion, (a scaled down 12 meter) with it's long and heavy keel.

Racing an Illusion is a busy affair, steering with your feet, racing a well balanced main and gib, hoisting and dropping a spinnaker. The saving grace is there is no spinnaker pole and you fly her with the lines in your hands.

The boats are launched from the crane. There are 3 races a race day. There were many gate starts during the inaugural year of the fleet but it is intended to work with other RVYC fleets to swap race officer duties and run more starts from the Victoria, the RVYC launch.

The apres on the lawn outside the club is one of the highlights of club life. Banter, beer and a meal from the Galley with one of the island favourite backdrops, what more could you ask for?
