Cadets at the RVYC 2023

Who are the Cadet Coordinators?

For sailing activities please contact Vikki Lovell and Susie Stone

They can be contacted on cadets@rvyc.org.uk

What do our Cadets do?

Meeting throughout the year on a Friday evening, the winter time is taken up with a mix of theory sessions and social activities in the clubhouse.

Our first On the Water RYA OnBoard sailing session will be on 14 April 2023 with tag table closing at 1715 and typically every other Friday dependent on tides until mid-September. If the weather is too inclement to sail, cadets meet at the club for sessions with their instructor.

On the Off the Water RYA OnBoard nights the groups meet for short theory sessions with their instructors and some fun and games.

In the winter months, cadets meet for fun social gatherings, festive entertainment and pre-season talks and training.

Who can join in?

Cadets need to be a member of the club and be aged between 8 and 18 years.

Please be aware numbers are limited, before joining the club as a member, check there is availability with the cadet team .

You do not need to have your own boat to sail in the cadet programme. In the first instance, a number of boats are available to hire.

What will you learn?

As an RYA Onboard Club, we will be using our Friday night sessions as a safe and fun way for our cadets to get out on the water and learn to sail well and confidently. As an RYA Training Centre, our sessions are run by qualified dinghy instructors. The sessions are also expertly supported by our club volunteers.

Cadet Week is the perfect time to complete any RYA qualifications. The days are both theory and water-based to enable cadets to achieve a variety of qualifications. The cadets work towards stages suitable for their ability and experience. Cadet Week culminates in the RVYC Creek Race and is the first opportunity for many cadets to take part in a sailing race event.

Some of the qualifications you will be able to gain during Cadet week (5 ro 8 August 2023) are:

  • Youth Stages 1 to 4
  • Start Racing
  • Day Sailing
  • Seamanship
  • Sailing with Spinnakers

Cadet Week Registration - There is a separate registration event held for Cadet Week as it is an Open Event and our existing cadets may be joined by family members, friends and those visiting the island.

Cadet Power Boat training runs alongside the sailing programme and provides opportunities for older cadets to qualify in PowerBoat Level 2 (PB2). Cadets also gain experience of powerboat handling and safety boat support during on-the-water cadet sessions.

Cadet Registration for 2023 is on 3rd March Link to download form below.
