WASZP GP Open - 14/15 June 2025

Day 1

We kicked off the regatta with a building SW breeze force 4 to 5 increasing to 6 later. Positioned near Woodside Bay, we set a windward - leeward course. Conditions were gusty but with the land nearby the sea state was relatively flat allowing for excellent foiling conditions.

The strong breeze, gusts and shifts resulted in the more experienced foilers take a stronghold on the leader board after five races with Martin Evans securing four first place finishes. The Hoyle family, father and son also punched in some excellent top three scores in conditions that were challenging. Daniel Goodman and Max Rawlinson were also enjoying these conditions, with Max winning race 2! We express our congratulations to all the competitors for enduring such conditions especially during the long distance race which saw the strongest winds of the regatta. The course was a laid windward mark (S), Colette (S), LINE, Ryde Post (S), LINE. Competitors could choose to either do the first half or the full course. A very well done to Colin, Harry & Harriet for seeing the finish line. It was incredible to see your determination. Martin won the long distance race but Peter Hoyle was in close pursuit to come second.

Day 2

Lighter winds with 8 to 11kts from the WSW. The race course was moved to Quarr. Flat waters and an up and down breeze resulted in tricky conditions as boats were between foiling and low rider mode for the majority of races.

Ian Fitzgerald had something to prove on Sunday, taking the first two race wins by storm! Later in the day Max Rawlinson joined the action at the front securing two wins too after getting two UFD results earlier in the day.

The lesser experienced racers found some great form in the lighter winds, taking to low riding conditions well. Home racer Harry O'Callaghan showed us RVYC members how it's done with some impressive results and foiling. Harriet George also found some form early in the day securing a fifth place finish in the light winds.

Well done to all the racers who took part. We thank you for your support in coming to this event, us volunteers love seeing you all foil around. With that being said, a huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this event possible. We'd be lost without you. Thank you to our Race Officer Steve WS for getting 11 races in over 2 days, that's how you do it!

Overall Results after 11 races:

1st Place - Martin Evans (19 pts)

2nd Place - Ian Fitzgerald (29 pts)

3rd Place - Daniel Goodman (30 pts)

See you all in 2026 for some more Isle of Wight foiling action at the RVYC!

Thank you to Nici Hoyle for some fantastic photos on Sunday.
