Update on resumption of recreational boating : 12 May 2020

Published 10:23 on 13 May 2020

RVYC REMAINS CLOSED

On Sunday evening the Prime Minister signalled that lockdown restrictions will begin to ease, allowing people to travel to where they wish to exercise and to exercise for unlimited periods of time from tomorrow, Wednesday 13 May. However, at the time of writing, social distancing remains in force and we are still awaiting guidance as to how the easing will apply specifically to recreational boating.

We understand that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), will be issuing detailed guidance for recreational boating by the middle of this week.

The clubhouse will remain closed and all recreational boating and on-the-water activities remain suspended (as far as the Club is concerned), until such time as :

On-the-water activities and recreational boating have been clarified

Detailed risk assessments have been carried out at the club

Changes made such as installing hand sanitising dispensers, slipway cleaning, signage and social distancing information

QHM has just issued a new Local Notice to Mariners updating their advice for recreational boating. Latest advice from the RYA can be read here

As soon as we can reintroduce some activities we will do so. Please bear in mind that we will need to do things differently for some time. We appreciate that members may find this frustrating but be assured that the health and safety of our members, volunteers and staff is the Club's number one priority at all times. We must take a slow and steady approach to resuming our activities.

The slipways are not fit for purpose and are extremely slippery and a hazard. The club slipway will be cleaned on either Thursday or Friday.

The effective eradication of Covid-19 relies on people taking individual and collective responsibility. It is the Club's role to facilitate safe activity in line with Government preventative measures to protect health and well-being and to minimise pressure on frontline services. Everybody has a role to play by following Government guidelines.

The situation is obviously changing rapidly. We will update you as soon as we have some clarification on what we may and may not do but from tomorrow, Wednesday, there will be no change and the clubhouse will remain closed. You may check your boat in the dinghy park, but you come to the club at your own risk. No club assets may be used (for example, the crane, slipway, club tender and dinghies, etc) until further notice.

Thank you for your understanding. We do not wish to put anyone at risk.
