TST Series 7 & Cruisers Sunday B1 : 3 June 2018
A beautiful summer's day saw eight Squibs come out to race and the wind gods just about mustered enough puff to get them around a single lap. Slow handicappers found it difficult to make progress against the fast-ebbing tide but the Charlottes in their Feva managed to complete their course while Sam Osborne's Tera had to retire. Before the Squibs started, a lone cruiser set off into the South Easterly breeze for her zig-zag course around the cans and the crew on Nitric had plenty of opportunity to practise their spinnaker handling skills during their 90-minute race. Around the windward mark there were three clear leaders who had all started at the up-tide pin end; Steve W-S with guest crew Simon Giles, bare-chested Gibson boys and the Dymocks looking most contemporary in their experimental white sails. The fleet then had a shy reach to the wing mark and the leaders hoisted spinnakers about half-way down the leg. At the leeward mark, it all went a bit pear-shaped for the Dymocks in Viper who mis-judged the tide and dropped a few places. At some point the Gibson boys in Whizzard slipped into the lead and took line honours from Steve W-S and Julie Prime and Scott Holdstock in third.
