After cancelling the winter dinghy regatta due to a blizzard, a slight breeze and still waters were a perfect start to the season for the Commissioning Cup race and attracted a good size fleet out of hibernation. This cup was presented by former Commodore, Ian Vallender, with the aim of getting people and boats out on the water right at the start of the season.
Race officer, Chris Gibson, set an average lap course with Squibs, dinghies and a cruiser all starting together. Although Sam Prime in Buccaneer started three minutes after the rest of the fleet, he finished as first Squib ahead of Viper, Rhapsody and Whizzard.
After much fighting throughout the 40 minute race, eventual cup winner was Alex Downer in a Laser, followed by Charlie White (Laser), and Chris Andrew and Steve Sheridan (RS400).
This Sunday, Easter Sunday, the racing season starts in earnest with the first two Island Ales races and a cruiser race. On Monday, there are three races for dinghies in the bank holiday series and one cruiser race.
The club's Squib fleet have their spring regatta on Saturday. Not forgetting the popular annual Easter duck race is on Saturday. Ducks hit the water at noon!
