SVYC Prince Philips Cup on Saturday 10th June 2017

At the SVYC Prince Philips Cup on Saturday 10th June 2017, the RVYC went into bat so to speak, combining youth and experience to good effect. Andrew Porteus, Charlie White and Phil Russell were up against 7 other 3-man teams including Poona, Bembridge Sailing Club, Royal Thames, Royal Yacht Squadron, to name the 4 winning teams in order. These teams were able to show better consistency at the starts and boat speed around the course. However that didn't stop our Charlie White putting in the best performance of the day for RVYC with a glorious second in one of the 2 sprint windward, leeward races after lunch.

Six races were held with a twitchy E- SE winds (F3-4) on a wonderful day on the eastern Solent. The first 2 races were fast as the wind was up. Spinnakers made for too lively a downwind run in the first race so it was signalled to competitors by Race Officer Martin Harrison (RVYC) that they would not be used in the second. After a fine lunch at the club house, races continued and as the wind had dropped to about a F 2-3, spinnakers were back in use.

As Charlie White had helm-ed the best results of the day it was decided that he would be best positioned to take us into the final 'double point' race. Although racing was very close it seemed our lot that we wouldn't make any further progress through the leader board.

RVYC came 6th behind Seaview. Mark & Jo and Alex Downer (RVYC members) came second representing Bembridge.

Poona thanked SVYC and the race officer team for a memorable day out on the water and mentioned that Prince Philip would receive a full report.
