Race Report - WL3 - Sunday 9 July

Published 21:44 on 9 Jul 2017

The third race in the Wightlink series was held in a light southerly breeze last Sunday. Six Squibs took to the start line first and it was Incognito (Ian Morgan and Rachel Wroath who showed how to get off the line best in a strong ebb tide, followed by Tamsin and Steve Baker in Peregrin. However the form of the Gibson boys, Ben and Chris in Wizard soon showed and they took an unthreatened lead at the windward mark. After dreadful starts Buccaneer (Emma and Sam Primer) and Osprey (Chris and Sue McGear) also moved through the gears, with Osprey just pipping Buccaneer for second at the end as the breeze came in from their side of the course, while Phil Russell and Simon Evans held onto fourth.
The fast dinghies were next away, also fighting the strong tide and light wind, and the RS400 (Chris and Steve Shendrew) was always going to do well on handicap, and also took line honours too. Next was an impressive finish of 5 Lasers in less than 2 minutes, Harry White (radial) just pipping James Lord (full rig) for second and third, with Charlie White fourth and Paddy Lord 5th as the course was shortened in the fickle breeze.
The remainder of the Evans family were competing in the Optimist Class, doing superbly to stem the tide and keep out of the way of the larger boats too. After another shortened course it was Noah who kept his nose in front of twin brother Finn, with little sister Daisy coming a creditable third on a tricky day. Well done all.
