Cowes Week Squib Report 2017

A fantastic fleet of 26 Squibs competed in Cowes Week this year - and 17 of these had RVYC members onboard. An excellent week with varied conditions challenged both the sailors and their boats.

The week started with no wind and a lot of rain, leaving two-thirds of the fleet stranded. Big thanks to the frontrunners for giving up their beers to rescue us as we drifted home in the rain! The rest of the week continued with varied courses, with Stu Rix and RVYC's Steve Warren-Smith getting 4/4 firsts by the mid-week prize-giving on Tuesday. A very windy Wednesday followed, with a short inshore course causing a bit of a shakeup in the top positions with visiting boat White Magic claiming first place. Thursday was a rest day due to the strong winds and large waves that swept through the Solent.

On Friday a hard-fought victory went to Alex and Mark Downer on Panther 3, following a race zig-zigging in the eastern Solent, around enormous car transporters and the various other fleets!

Saturday was due to be a calmer day. However, six minutes before the start an apocalyptic squall swept through the Solent claiming two Redwing masts and battering the waiting Squib fleet back into the Medina for safety! Thankfully the squall past and left us with some lovely conditions to finish off the week, with a downwind finish along the Green and the last cannon of the week being earnt by Steve Warren-Smith and guest helm Freddie!

Huge thanks must be given to Gail and her team for putting on a delicious meal for the class dinner on Tuesday evening, and to all the members who helped with launching and recovering the visiting Squibs and lending their RIBs to ensure it all ran smoothly.
