Scows newsletter : Winter 2020

Welcome to the launch of our own class Newsletter, my idea being that it will bring all the relevant information that you need as a class member Linked together hopefully with some articles and letters from your good selves. The first of which is an article by our good friend Andrew Porteous, titled Some Musings about Scows and Wootton creek; I think you will agree a good read.
Together with things such as articles for sale appertaining to Scows & other boaty bits [that is, not your old sofas!] And a sprinkling of Photos to add a bit of colour, hopefully it will provide a platform to air your thoughts and opinions.
Our class lunch seamed to go of reasonably well, it was good to catch up with most and to those I missed my apologies, the time seamed to fly by. One felt there was a great deal of enthusiasm regarding the coming season and our program of events on offer, let's hope it will be our best yet. My only reservation regarding the day would be I think we will need more room next year, I think it would be fair to say it was a little cramped, some might say cosy.
I would be interested on your thoughts and ideas on how we can expand on the social element of the group in the future.
Also keen also to try and see if we can run a couple of coaching sessions for those that may benefit from them it's no good going to all the trouble of encouraging new members to our group only to see them move on at the end of the season because they have found it too hard to grasp, and have become disgruntled , People are always reluctant to ask for help and guidance but would be more inclined to join in if we had some regular coaching in place starting say with the right way to rig your boat we are not asking you to give away your winning ways, more making some one else's experience more enjoyable, Maybe something for the more experience of you to take on?
Our first days sailing in 2020 will be on Tuesday April the 28th Start time 13.30 spring one
However there will be a Pre season briefing beforehand David Longford is of the opinion that a fair number of us could benefit from attending, start time 12.00. There will be Gourmet Scow burgers on offer from the Galley, with Island reared beef in a brioche bun ,with the options of cheese & salad filings, all for £6 a head or bacon sarnies at £3-95 and something to wash it down with before we get under way, more of that nearer the time.
Apparently Bembridge and the East Wight clubs have expressed a desire for more inter club co-operation regarding the Scows, what exactly they have in mind is not clear as yet other than apparently there used to be an Island Scow championships held once upon a time and I believe Bembridge are keen to revive it, More to follow.
I think you will all agree with me that we are extremely lucky to have David Longford as our principle race officer not wishing to overload him with all our fixtures and the fact he likes to sail himself from time to time, I have managed to engage Keith Evens to run our evening series for us this year.
We will also need to try and recruit regular Rib crew-crews for our fixtures. For I will not be available all the time this year. I will try advertising within the club first, I am sure we will find someone that will fit the bill. If not then we will have to have to set up a rota amongst our self's to call on when needed.
