Frostbite Race report : 25th November 2018
Published 12:19 on 29 Nov 2018
RVYC's Frostbite series race officer, Martin Harrison, planned three races last Sunday in the hope of catching up on the events lost of the weather earlier in the series. There was a good turnout in the chilly F5 north-easter blowing straight into the Creek.
There were a couple of early casualties in the blustery and lumpy conditions. Chris and Matt Bamber called it a day in only their second outing in their Fireball while Alice Pope as the sole Oppie sailor pluckily raced until a combination of choppy sea and wind and tide forced her to retire. Finn and Noah Evans completed one race until gear problems with their Feva sent them back to the club. This left the field clear for the Charlottes – Andrews and Osborne, to finish the rest of the races at the top of the slow handicap leader board.
In the Laser-dominated fast fleet, it was good to see Arthur Farley back on his home waters, with some cracking sailing, taking first place in all three races ahead of Harry White in the first and third race and Charlie White in the second. Having won the start, Neil Griffiths and Mark Turner in their RS400 were way ahead of the fleet in race 2 until a spectacular capsize cost them first place on corrected time, whilst the other RS400 with Steve Sheridan and Chris Andrews also managed a similarly spectacular capsize on their way back to the club.
Four cruisers raced from Mother to Peel Bank, then a beat out to SE Ryde Middle, running to Peel Wreck with a reach to the leeward mark and the line. Blue Chaser, helmed by Richard Rae crewed by Graham Bellingham and Chris Rickman, were first on the line, just over 20 minutes ahead of the next finisher. But on corrected time, the trimaran lost of to Chris Turner in Elsa. Third place went to Mark Weeks and crew in Mymo.
There is no frostbite race this Sunday; the penultimate two races take place on 9 December for all classes.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is a curry and quiz night. Teams of up to six people. Food should be booked through the office.
