Cadet Laying Up Supper : 22nd September 2017

It was a busy end to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club cadet 2017 sailing season with 45 young people from eight to 18 attending the Cadet Laying Up Supper last Friday.
After supper, the cadets were enthralled by a talk by cadet parent, Brian Thompson. Brian is a well-respected British offshore racer who made it into the history books by becoming the first Briton to break the round the world sailing record twice. He is a vastly experienced and successful offshore racer on all types of high performance yachts – from 21 foot Mini Transat racers to 140 foot Maxi trimarans. The cadets watched a fascinating video of one of Brian's record-breaking voyages and were able to ask lots of questions - the most popular being how they all went to the toilet!
The evening marked the end of the summer sailing season which saw up to 60 cadets on the water on Friday evenings and 48 attending the ever-popular cadet week. RYA certificates ranging from Level 1 to Seamanship skills were awarded during the volunteer-led programme which is on the water from April to September . Cadets have also represented the RVYC during the summer months at many national regattas including Cowes Week, the Optimist Nationals, the traveller series and Laser championships . Cadets will continue to sail during the winter months with the Frostbite series and winter training.
