Annual Prize Giving 2016

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club held its annual prize giving for the 2016 sailing season on Sunday 18th December 2016. A packed room of Squib, Cruisers , Cadets , Scows and Optimist sailors and their families welcomed Mark Persad, Head of Marketing from Wightlink who awarded the Wightlink series trophies for individual races held at the club during July 2016.
Wightlink Series winners:
- Slow Handicap in his Optimist – Cameron Blamey
- Fast Handicap in his Solution– Derek Stroud
- Squib Class – Steve Warren Smith
Wightlink has sponsored over 60 Solent crossings during 2016 to enable the RVYC sailors to represent the club and gain valuable experience on the mainland and abroad.
This year the Squib fleet travelled to France for the Squib European Cup and the Squib Inland Championships at Burford; the Optimist cadets went to the Nationals at Largs in Scotland in July and the Southern Zone selection Squads events in Weymouth, Spinnaker and Hayling Island. Other individual sailors pitched themselves at the National 12 Championship; Feva World Championships in Spain and RS300 Nationals in Exmouth.
For Sailing outside the Club, Trophy Winners include:
- Sesquicentennial Trophy: Matt Bamber
- Bryan Willis Optimist Trophy: Arthur Farley
- Most Improved under 12: Noah Evans
Wightlink sponsorship also enabled the RVYC to welcome participants to the Optimist Open in April 2016 & the Merrydown Club Regatta in September 2016.
Tony Pope , Commodore of the RVYC commented:
"It has been another fantastic year at RVYC culminating in the prize giving event where we were able to celebrate our partnership with Wightlink to whom we are very gratefully for their support , as well as celebrating the achievements of our fantastic sailors and volunteers . "
Mark Persad added: "It was a pleasure to attend the prize giving and see all the skill and enthusiasm that flows throughout the club and its members of all ages."
