Frostbite 3- Cruiser 4
On a beautiful sunny Autumn day with a keen N-NW wind blowing between 10-15 knots, 32 sailors engaged in a full morning of sailing. It was a 10am start, meaning the volunteered safety crew and box team were up early, busy organizing marks and generally dodging Squibs trying to launch before racing.
5 cruisers were off first and, as with the previous week, created an exciting spectacle on the ODM on the start. As expected Nitric & Luella sped off in the breeze and left the Parker Seals to battle it out close quarters.
With big tides running Ryde to Cowes the sea was making it wet work up wind for the rest of the fleets. 8 Squibs set off on a trapezoid shaped course using Peel Wreck, Woodside and Fairway on about a 35-45 minute laps. Ben and Chris Gibson got an early lead and held off the rest however it was confided to me that Hussar 'would have had them' if the race hadn't been shortened after the second lap. Bar talk ?
The fast handicap flew around the same course with Simon Giles, Shanklin Sailing club, taking line honours in his Dart. Paddy Lord in his Laser 4.7 pipped Neil Griffiths and Mark Turner in their RS400 on handicap.
3 brave Optimist sailors hit the line together on the gun and Cameron Blamey completed the short windward leeward course first with Finn Evans second.
The bar was very sociable place to be after the event and many stayed on for one of Gail's fantastic Sunday roasts.
