Squib End of Season Regatta 2016

Published 09:14 on 20 Oct 2016

On Saturday the 15th October eight of the RVYC Squib fleet took to the water to compete in the Squib End of Season Regatta 2016. Three races were to take place with all of them counting towards the final score meaning consistency was needed for success.
As the competitors arrived the wind was looking extremely light. The Race Officer for the day, Chris Gear, implemented a short postponement to allow for the wind to build as the sun broke through the cloud. The first two races were to be a simple windward course with short legs to encourage close racing.

The 1st start was a clean affair except for the clash of two sisters, Emma Baker in Buccaneer and Sophie in Peregrin coming together causing the prior to take penalty turns. The fleet arrived at the windward mark with the wind starting to drop again causing a very closely grouped fleet heading downwind. Steve Warren-Smith and Becky Pontin in Aquabat broke clear of the fleet to come home with a victory, followed by Martin Harrison and Tom in Hussar who climbed through the fleet to 2nd, David Longford and Angie White brought Kestrel home in 3rd.

The 2nd race saw Andrew Porteous and Jerry Westbrook in Firecracker Too lead to the first mark only to hit it and have to take penalty turns. This allowed Hussar to take the lead and claim the win. Firecracker Too held on to second all the way until the finish line, where they hit the mark again! This allowed Emma Baker and Sam Prime in Buccaneer into 2nd, Aquabat to 3rd and Scott and Charlie Holdstock's Jess into 4th before Firecracker crossed the line.

The 3rd Race was run over a longer course "around the cans". Hussar showed the fleet a clean pair of heels at the start and ran away to a comfortable victory in the race and overall victory for the regatta. A close battle behind for the minor places including Aquabat, Firecracker Too and Buccaneer with plenty of changes of position ended with Aquabat taking both 2nd in the race and 2nd overall, Firecracker Too came home 3rd, with Buccaneer 4th, which was enough to secure 3rd overall.
The whole fleet enjoyed a great day with plenty of close racing and great weather. Plans are already in motion for more days of racing next season.
