The
Royal Victoria Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight again hosted a
round of the Laser South Coast Grand Prix on Sauturday 10th April.
Event Report by Derek Stroud
A small
but select group of eleven competitors enjoyed sparkling conditions
in the first regatta of 2010 in the Laser Class South Coast Grand
Prix series hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. Although light
winds prevailed, which clearly discouraged the normal turn out from
the mainland, the three scheduled races were successfully completed
by boats representing all three Laser rigs.
Martin
Harrison was Race Officer for the day and the conditions kept him and
his team on their toes as the early wind swung between an Easterly
and South Easterly causing many mark changes during the day. The
standard rig class was dominated by Ian Morgan of Weston S.C. who won
all three races. Giles Peckham of Gurnard S.C. and Peter May of
Spinnaker S.C. tousled for the remaining podium places but it was
Peckham’s two second places that guaranteed him the runner up slot.
Josh Peckham also of Gurnard and the host club’s Sam Prime finished
fourth and fifth respectively.
Things
were a lot tighter in the Laser Radial fleet where only two points
separated 1st and fourth after the discard. Jenn Botherill
of Sutton Bingham opened proceedings by winning the first race from
Gurnard’s Jane Peckham and Libby Deegan. However, the Royal
Victoria’s Derek Ness was determined not to let the girls have
things all their own way and won the second race whilst the ladies
behind were scrapping for second place. On the line, all three were
separated by barely a boat length with Botherill taking second from
Deegan. Race three saw the fleet turned on it’s head on the final
beat as wind shifts took their toll. At the finish, Peckham came
through to take the race and the overall win. Botherill’s third was
enough to claim second overall and Ness’s score line gave him
third.
Having
only sailed a Laser for an hour prior to the event, the Royal
Victoria’s Brad McLaughlin took two wins in the 4.7 class. Brad is
in transition from the Optimist Class and the light winds clearly
suited him in his new boat. Emma Baker, also from the host club, did
get the better of Brad in race three but the discards gave him
overall first place.
A proud
Sue McLaughlin kindly presented the prizes back at the club with
special congratulations going to son Brad.
