| Royal Vic clean up at Gurnard dinghy week Royal Vic dinghy sailors walked off with some of the top prizes at Gurnard dinghy week prize giving on Friday night. In the Laser class Ben Gibson took first place with a string of firsts and only one 3rd place which was discarded. Ben was also awarded the overall cup for this impressive performance. Sam Prime took 3rd place in the Laser class. In the Laser 4.7 class after a week of neck and neck competition Bradley McLaughlin just pipped Emma Baker to first place. Dominic Mortimer took 3rd place. It just gets bigger and better! Last week saw the number of Dinghy Instructors at the club increase by three, congratulations to John Clack, Alan Westwood and Paul Robinson. Add to that compliment the successful addition of Sally Everitt as Senior Instructor after passing the course at Seaview YC, bringing the number of training personnel who are qualified to teach at the club to 4 Senior Instructors, 20 Dinghy Instructors, 6 Keelboat Instructors, 3 Race Coaches, 6 Powerboat Instructors, 1 Safety boat Instructor and 3 Assistant Instructors. Which brings our instructor compliment to 31, (some are qualified in several diciplines), which is an excellent result considering we only had 2 at the start of 2009! Add the sheltered waters of Wootton Creek and Woodside Bay and a superb club location and convinient for the Fishbourne ferry, what better club to come and train at? This may be one of the reasons why the Club was last week given the award of Volvo RYA Champion Club Full Status. Commenting on this achievement Chris Atherton RYA High Performance Manager for the southern region said. 'Clearly you and your team have put a great deal of effort into meeting the criteria for a Full Status Volvo RYA Champion Club. This work will provide a very sound basis upon which the Junior and Youth section can develop and the young sailors involved fully benefit from the programme. I am very impressed with the work you have been doing to increase the number and ability of your coaching team.' The award will be presented on Sunday the 15th August which appropriately marks the end of Cadet Week. Well done to all involved.
