Next Winter Talk
8 February ‘The View from the Bridge’- a sea captain’s encounters with yachts!
Speaker: Capt. Colin Johnston
P & O Strategic Development Manager (Rtd.)
Illustrated by a slide presentation, ‘The View from the Bridge’ is intended to give a view of small craft such as our beloved boats as seen from the bridge of large commercial craft.
Colin Johnston, a retired Master Mariner, lays particular emphasis on how difficult it is for those on a ship’s bridge some 40 metres or more above sea level to spot small leisure craft. He goes on to discuss the various ways we as leisure sailors can make best use of evolving technology to make others aware of our presence when out in the wide blue yonder.
Colin himself has spent a lifetime in the maritime industry. He served his apprenticeship with the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company
Now retired, he continues to act occasionally as a Marine Consultant and cruises on both sides of the Channel in his Oceanis 411 – so he will be speaking very much from experience on all counts!
Every Thursday
2.30 – 4.30 p.m. Bridge Improvers’ Club
Friendly weekly sessions of non-competitive 'kitchen' bridge are open to all Club members. £2 per person (which includes tea and biscuits). For further information please contact Jane Pearson on 884138 or e mail: tony_pearson@talk21.com (preferably before coming along to the Club).
Every Friday
10.00 – 12 noon Leisure Painting Group:
Why not practise your artistic skills (good or not so good!) in the company of this small informal band of friends who join together to paint in any medium. We encourage each other, enjoy the club atmosphere and do "our own thing". No real competence necessary, just enthusiasm. A donation of £2 towards the Club charity of the year is the only obligation. We look forward to seeing you there! (For more information, call Meryel Boyd: 01983-566747).
